Disabled Anglers Love this Wheelchair-Accessible Wisconsin Cabin
It seems like wheelchair-accessible cabins are few and far between these days, but this northwoods Wisconsin gem is a real find. Designed by a wheelchair-user, the property has all the comforts of home, and the access to match. You can just kick back with friends and enjoy the great outdoors, or check out some of the nearby accessible fishing areas. This two-bedroom Rhinelander cabin is located on three wooded acres, and can sleep up to six people comfortably, so it’s also the perfect choice for a family getaway. And since it’s just 135 miles northwest of Green Bay, it’s close enough for even a short break.
Cabin Sweet Cabin
A wide cement walkway leads up to the door of this wheelchair-accessible Wisconsin cabin, which features a wide doorway and a threshold plate. Inside there’s plenty of room to maneuver even a large wheelchair or scooter around the cabin, which boasts an antler chandelier to complete that northwoods ambiance.
The kitchen features a roll-under cooktop, a lowered oven, a roll-under sink, a refrigerator and a microwave. Add in a large selection of cups, plates, dishes, utensils and pots and pans, and you have everything you need to whip up a gourmet meal. Not only is there good pathway access throughout the kitchen, but because of the design it’s also possible for wheelchair-users to cook there, rather than just wheel through it.
The large dining table has five chairs, and space at the end for a wheelchair. The adjacent living room is equally accessible with a 12-inch high king sofa bed and a TV. And there’s also a 17-inch high futon out on the sun porch.
The master bedroom is furnished with a 23-inch high king-sized bed with wheelchair access on both sides, two night tables, and a chest of drawers. An additional bedroom has two 24-inch high twin beds, with an access aisle between them.
The spacious bathroom has a full five foot turning radius, and is equipped with a large roll-in shower with a hand-held showerhead. A portable shower/commode chair is provided, and the toilet has a grab bar on the right side (as seated). Top it off with a roll-under sink and some lowered clothing hooks and you have a very usable bathroom.
But Wait — There’s More
To say that this cabin is equipped with just about everything you could possible need is a bit of an understatement. It also includes a washer and dryer, and an extra roll away bed. And there’s plenty of books and games to keep the little ones busy.
There’s level access out to the spacious back patio, which has a raised charcoal grill and an accessible picnic table. And there are plenty of extra patio chairs on the sun porch, to set up around the the grill.
And owner Wendy Baker adds, “Accessible fishing areas are located nearby at Hot Rapids Dam and Boom Lake.” So pack you fishing gear, and your sense of adventure and get ready to enjoy this rural Wisconsin retreat.
