Slow Walker Lodging Options
I am newly retired slow walker who wants to travel. I can’t walk very far and getting out of low beds is an issue for me. Are there hotel chains that offer consistently high beds? Are there any weekly or monthly lodging options that would work for me? I am up to traveling just about any place as long as I can be comfortable. How about travel trailers? Do you know anyone who can customize trailers? I am looking for ideas.
Beds are really a sticky issue because they are not covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act as they are removable furniture; but the good news (for you) is, most hotels tend to favor higher beds. It totally varies from property to property, even if they are in the same chain. That said, the quickest way to find out about bed height is to call the hotel directly and ask them for the measurement.
As for weekly or monthly rentals, I like Airbnd (www.Airbnd.com), as they have been pretty responsive to the disabled community and have added some access filters to their search feature. Additionally, it’s easy to ask the property owners about bed heights. Plus most properties on that site offer weekly and monthly discounts.
Travel trailers are another issue entirely. They can be pretty pricey, but North American RV (http://northamericanrvllc.com/) can custom build wheelchair-accessible trailers.
Hope that helps!
