Looking for a Wheelchair-Accessible Hawaii Condo
I’d like to visit Maui this winter, and I use a manual wheelchair. I need to find a wheelchair-accessible apartment or condo with a roll-in shower that I can rent for a few weeks. Do you have any suggestions? I’d also like to give SCUBA a try. Do you have any resources for that, or know of any place that can accommodate me?
Maui sounds like a great place for a winter break. I do happen to know of one accessible condo for rent, and it’s owned by a wheelchair-user. Bruce Bernhardt’s two-bedroom two-bathroom unit is located in Ma’alaea just 100 feet from the ocean. Access features include wide doors, tile floors, good pathway access and even remote fan and drapery controls.
The master bedroom is furnished with an open-frame king-sized bed with wheelchair access on both sides, and the master bathroom is equipped with a roll-in shower, a toilet with grab bars, and a roll-under sink. The other bedroom has a queen-sized Murphy bed that can be folded up out of the way when not needed. The unit also has a fully equipped kitchen, a large living area and a double lanai. It can accommodate up to four adults. For more information and to see photos of the unit, visit mauiaccessiblecondo.com.
As far as SCUBA is concerned, Lahaina Dives is the place to go. They have Handicapped Scuba Association-certified instructors and dive buddies on staff, and a dive boat that’s wheelchair-accessible. For more information, visit www.lahainadivers.com.
Have a great time in Maui!
