Acropolis Wheelchair Access Improvements Unveiled
Although the Greek tourism industry is shuttered due to COVID-19, new access improvements were recently added to the Acropolis. On December 3, 2020 Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis unveiled a new platform lift and a series of accessible pathways at the historic Athens attraction. Previously there was an old lift and hoist system on the north face of the Acropolis, but it was rarely operational. This new addition provides reliable and safe wheelchair access to the top of Acropolis Hill. Additionally, a series of 13-foot wide accessible concrete pathways now replace the uneven stone walkways around the temples on the summit. These new access improvements, which were funded by the Onassis Foundation, now make the Acropolis fully accessible to wheelchair-users and slow walkers.
