A Wheelchair-Accessible Door County Retreat
Located on three acres just outside of Egg Harbor, this six-room property offers a wide variety of choices for wheelchair-users and slow walkers. There is level access to the front door, with good pathway access inside. Low pile carpet without any padding makes it easy to roll around, and all the beds are open-framed so they can accommodate Hoyer lifts. Named for the popular quilt pattern, the inn features hand made quilts in all the guest rooms. And for that extra touch of comfort, there is also a fireplace and a refrigerator in every room.
Room 3 and Room 6 each have a roll-in shower with a portable shower bench, grab bars and a hand-held showerhead. Room 3 has toilet grab bars on the back and right walls (as seated), while Room 6 has them on the back and left walls (as seated). Both bathrooms have roll-under sinks. Room 3 is furnished with a 27-inch queen-sized bed, but if you can’t manage that, there is also a recliner in the room. Room 6 has two 26-inch high twin beds.
The other four rooms all have a bathroom with a tub/shower combination with a fold down shower bench, a hand held showerhead and grab bars. Other access features include toilet grab bars and a roll-under sink in each bathroom. Rooms 1, 4 and 5 have 25-inch high queen-sized beds, while Room 2 is furnished with two 26-inch high twin beds.
There is good access to the public areas of the property, including the dining room, where a “Continental Plus” breakfast is served daily. It consists of coffee, tea, fruit and coffee cake. Sandy can also make arrangements for salt-free, sugar-free, dairy-free and gluten-free choices.
The Feathered Star B&B is a very comfortable property, and Sandy is happy to work with special access requests. Just let her know what you need, and she’ll she what she can do to make it happen.
Tase the Local Products
Make sure and have a taste of the local products while you’re in the area. Top off your Door County visit with a stop at Lautenbach’s Orchard Country Winery and Market (866-946-3263, www.orchardcountry.com), located on Highway 42, about a half-mile past Fish Creek. There is level access to the store, which boasts a bountiful collection of local goodies; from cheese and freshly baked goods to cherry preserves and wines. Not only do they offer a selection of traditional grape wines, but they also have fruit wines, sparkling wines and fruit and grape blends.
