Red Rock Views at Wheelchair-Accessible Utah Ranch Resort
Although there’s no shortage of scenic beauty in Moab, Sorrel River Ranch Resort (www.sorrelriver.com) gives visitors a double dose of Mother Nature. Located along scenic Highway 128, the lodge offers unparalleled views of the surrounding red rocks. As an added bonus, the drive to the property is nothing short of spectacular, as the route follows the Colorado River, framed by a red rock canyon on both sides. Best of all, this secluded resort is located far away from the hustle and bustle of Main Street Moab, and just minutes from Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. Even better — the resort is wheelchair-accessible.
Access is good at the lodge, with accessible parking near the front lobby, and ramp access up to the main lodge. Inside, there’s level access to the registration desk, with plenty of room to navigate a wheelchair. There is barrier-free access to the first floor of the adjacent restaurant, and elevator access to the second floor. There is also level access out to the pool from the lobby.
The Accessible Suite
The luxurious suites are scattered throughout the grounds, and accessible suite B6 is located next door to the main lodge. Parking is available in a gravel area or in a paved parking lot across the street from the suite. There is an accessible drop-off area near the sidewalk that leads over to the suite. Valet parking with luggage delivery in a golf cart is also available.
There’s ramp access up to the front porch of the suite, with level access over the threshold through a wide doorway. The spacious room is furnished with a 29-inch open-framed king-sized bed, with wheelchair access on the left side (as you face it). It also has a compact kitchenette with a microwave and a refrigerator, as well as a dining table with two chairs, The bathroom has a full five-foot turning radius, and is equipped with a roll-in shower with grab bars, a hand-held showerhead and a fold-down shower bench. The toilet grab bars are located on the back and right walls (as seated), and the bathroom also has a roll-under sink.
The Grounds
It’s a very comfortable and accessible suite. Additionally, it’s close to the river, which features a level riverside pathway dotted with benches. It’s a great place to enjoy the dramatic sunsets. There are also paved wheelchair-accessible pathways throughout the property, so there are plenty of places for everybody to explore.
This small property is very service oriented, so don’t be afraid to let the employees know about your access needs. With advance notice they can even fashion wooden access ramps for most of the other suites that have steps up to the front porches. Best of all, since this property occupies a good chunk of real estate, it never feels crowded, even when it’s fully booked. Sorrel River Ranch Resort is a wonderful place to escape the trappings of city life, and the perfect place to enjoy Utah’s beautiful red rock country.
