Accessible Uber Vehicles Available in London
Wheelchair-users now have another accessible transportation option in London, thanks to the addition of accessible vehicles to the Uber fleet. This option offers an alternate accessible way to get around London; and according to Tom Elvidge, Uber’s London General Manager, the fares are an average of 30 percent cheaper that those of the accessible London black cabs. Wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) are available in Zones 1-4, and they can be ordered on the Uber app. All WAVs are equipped with a rear entry ramp and tie-downs, and they can accommodate a “standard wheelchair”. Customers are advised to contact Uber at supportuk@uber.com if they have a larger wheelchair, to determine if an Uber WAV will work for them. To order a WAV vehicle, open the Uber app and choose the “‘uberWAV” option, place the pin at your pick-up location, and tap the “set pick up location” bar. Once your request is confirmed, you’ll be able to get in touch with the driver directly via the Uber app. Says Faryal Velmi, Director of Transport for All, “We are pleased that Uber is investing in disability equality training and working to use its technology to provide another additional transport option for disabled people in London.”
