A Wheelchair-Accessible Redwood Retreat
Located in the heart of California redwood country, Golden Eagle Vacation Rentals (https://goldeneaglevacationrentals.com/ ) features five comfortable cottages, nestled in a peaceful redwood and spruce grove. This Zen-like retreat was constructed in 2012, and it includes the wheelchair-accessible Orca Cottage. And you just can’t beat the location, as this wheelchair-accessible redwood retreat is only 18 miles from Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, and right next door to Sue-meg State Park.
The Orca Cottage
Perched above a pond, with a nice view of the forest, the Orca Cottage (#3) features accessible parking next to the unit, with ramp access up to the spacious front deck. Inside there are wood floors, wide doors and good pathway access throughout the two-room cottage.
The main room includes a love seat and an easy chair grouped around a gas fireplace; as well as a dining table with two chairs near the kitchen area. The 25-inch high queen-sized bed is tucked away in a nearby alcove, with wheelchair access on the right side (as you face it). The kitchen includes a dishwasher, a lowered microwave, a small refrigerator, coffee maker and even a toaster. A nice selection of plates, glasses, pots and pans and utensils are also included, so it’s easy to whip up a simple meal or two.
The spacious bathroom features a full five-foot turning radius and is equipped with a bathtub with grab bars, a handheld showerhead and a fold down tub bench. The toilet grab bars are located on the back and left walls (as seated), and the bathroom also includes a roll-under sink. Add in a lowered medicine cabinet and wheelchair- height towel holders, and you have a nicely accessible bathroom.
The Grounds
Of course the cottage is just one part of the equation — the setting is what puts this property over the top. The cottages are literally surrounded by the forest, and it’s not unusual to have deer wander up to the pond and even over to the cottages.
The front porch of the Orca Cottage has two large comfortable rocking chairs, and it’s the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine in the evening or watch the sunrise in the morning. There’s plenty of room for even the largest wheelchair on the porch, and it’s just a pleasant place to chill.
And if you’d like to enjoy a campfire, there’s a private campfire ring right below the cottage. It’s all set up and ready to go, so you don’t have to tote along firewood. And if you don’t want to mess with anything, the manager will even get the fire going for you. Just add some marshmallows for a relaxing fireside evening. It’s the perfect way to top off a wheelchair-accessible visit to the California redwoods.
