Access Improvements Slated for Tuolumne Meadows Campground
The largest campground on Yosemite National Park’s Tioga Road — Tuolumne Meadows Campground — has closed in order to complete access upgrades and make infrastructure repairs. Built in 1931 and expanded in the 1960s, this campground occupies 140 acres and serves more than 150,000 visitors per year.
The campground currently has six campsites that are designated as accessible; however the harsh winter weather and general wear and tear has rendered many of them unusable by wheelchair users. Access upgrades will include repairing the rutted campground roads, adding accessible parking, leveling the existing accessible campsites, and then covering them in decomposed granite. Lowered grills, accessible picnic tables and food lockers will also be added to all the accessible campsites.
The project will also include the relocation of 17 campsites in the floodplain, and the addition of 12 walk-in campsites. Additionally, the backpackers campground will be permanently relocated to the John Muir Trail trailhead.
The exact completion date for this project is unknown, as the length of the construction season varies due to the weather. It’s expected that Tuolumne Meadows Campground will reopen in 2024 or 2025. For updates on the closure visit www.nps.gov/yose/index.htm.
