Wheelchair-Accessible Kauai
I’m going to be going to Kauai this winter, and I can’t seem to find much information about accessible things to do there. I use a manual wheelchair. Can you offer me any suggestions?
The big “attraction” on Kauai is the natural beauty of the island, and to take it all in you’ll need some accessible transportation. To that end, you can rent an accessible van from Wheelers Van Rentals (https://wheelersvanrentals.com/) and explore the island yourself.
I highly recommend a stop at Waimea Canyon, as there is barrier-free access to the overlook, and the view is just awesome. Many people compare it to the Grand Canyon. There are lots of beautiful places to explore on the island and many great windshield views, so just get in your van and hit the road.
Also, if you’d like to take a helicopter tour of the island, Sunshine Helicopters (www.sunshinehelicopters.com) has a lift at their Lihue location. You have to be able to transfer to the helicopter for the tour, but they do a great tour and they understand access issues.
It’s really a beautiful island and I know you’ll have a great time.
