Wheelchair-Accessible Rhode Island Taxis
The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority recently unveiled their new fleet of wheelchair-accessible minivan taxis. Seven local taxi companies and the federal government funded the purchase of the accessible vehicles, which will serve 17 communities, including Newport, Providence, Woonsocket and Warwick’s T.F. Green Airport. The taxis feature ramped access and lowered floors and can accommodate assistive devices up to 30-inches wide and 750 pounds. They can carry four able-bodied passengers and one wheelchair-user. Accessible taxis can be ordered from local cab companies or hailed on the street. Trips beginning outside the local cab company’s territory must be booked 24 hours in advance.
