Wheelchair-Accessible African Safari
I’d like to go on a wheelchair-accessible African safari. I use a manual wheelchair and although I can transfer to a safari vehicle, it’s really better for me to stay in my own wheelchair. Do you have any suggestions?
I’d recommend a visit to Mala Mala Game Reserve (www.malamala.com) in South Africa. They offer an accessible suite complete with ramps, wide doorways, wheelchair-height furniture and a bathroom with a roll-in shower. Game drives are conducted in open 4-wheel drive vehicles, and wheelchair-users can either transfer to the front seat or remain in their own wheelchair in the back of the vehicle.
If, on the other hand you’d like a more rustic experience, Endeavour Safaris (www.endeavour-safaris.com/) may be a good choice for you. They offer accessible safaris in Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique and South Africa. Game drives are conducted in a ramped Toyota Landcruiser, and overnight accommodations are provided in accessible tents with ensuite toilets. The tents have level access, plenty of room to maneuver a wheelchair and wheelchair-height beds. Although camping isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, it’s really a great way to enjoy a traditional African safari.
