Brazilian Access Study Released
The results of the first national Brazilian study on travel and disability were released in the last quarter of 2013. According to the study, the cities that offer the best accessibility in the country are Recife, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba and Socorro; while those that offer the worst accessibility are Manaus, Goiania, Pantanal and Brasilia. The beaches in general were also found to have poor access. Sao Paulo and Recife were noted as places where people were more receptive to accessible tourism, while Curitiba, Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro were cited as the opposite. The main deterrents to accessible travel were found to be a lack of reliable access information, and the lack of truly accessible transportation. It’s hoped that the results of the study will be used to make Rio de Janeiro more accessible for the upcoming 2016 Olympics and Paralympics.
