Changes Afoot at Southmoreland on the Plaza
A Kansas City mainstay, Southmoreland on the Plaza (www.southmoreland.com) has been a go-to downtown lodging choice since the 1980s. Originally it operated as a bed and breakfast, but as of January 1, 2022 this entertainment district favorite turned over a new leaf, and it’s now a self-service luxury hotel. And although there are a few operational changes, it’s still a good choice for many wheelchair-users and slow walkers.
Southmoreland on the Plaza
Although this Colonial Revival mansion dates back to 1913, access upgrades have been added over the years. For example, even though steps grace the front facade of this historic property, the side entrance features ramped access just steps from the level parking area.
The accessible August Meyer Room, which is located on the first floor, boasts wide doorways, good pathway access and wood floors. The king-sized bed is 28-inches high, with adequate wheelchair clearance on one side. Other access features include a lowered closet rod and a wheelchair-height full-length mirror.
The spacious bathroom is outfitted with a roll-under sink, toilet grab bars on the back and left walls (as seated), and a two-person Jacuzzi tub with a hand-held showerhead. There are grab bars around the tub, which has a built in shower seat in the far corner. A portable shower bench is also included, but because of the size and shape of the tub, most folks will require some transfer assistance. Still it’s a good option for many slow walkers.
All of the first-floor public rooms feature level access, with the exception of the solarium, which can be accessed by a portable ramp. And you just can’t beat the location, as it’s just a short drive to nearby Country Club Plaza, where you’ll find a wide selection of dining options.
Operational Changes
With the transition from a bed and breakfast inn to a self-service hotel, Southmoreland on the Plaza instituted a number of operational changes. At the top of the list is the most obvious — they no longer serve breakfast. Previously, guests had to make a breakfast reservation, which many folks found cumbersome. The new option allows for a less structured morning, lets guests sleep in or linger on, and give folks the opportunity to enjoy one of the nearby restaurants.
Alternatively, you can bring along a frozen breakfast sandwich or entree, as a microwave is available in the common area and mini refrigerators have been added to the guest rooms. There is also a supply of dishes and glassware in the common area. And if you rent out the whole house for a group, you will also have access to the kitchen, so you can prepare your own meals.
There is a two-night minimum stay at the property, and there is no longer an on-site host. This will give guests more privacy; however someone is always available by phone if any problems arise. Additionally, the owners put together a book for each guest room, which contains lots of ideas of fun things to do in the area. Finally, bookings can now also be made through Airbnb; however you’ll dodge the extra fees if you book directly with the property.
