CN Tower Introduces Wheelchair-Accessible EdgeWalk
When Toronto’s CN Tower first introduced the EdgeWalk (www.edgewalkcntower.ca), thrill-seekers from around the world flocked to Ontario’s provincial capital to give it a try. The premise behind the stunt is simple: participants don protective suits, then hook on to special cables, and proceed to creep around the CN Tower ledge, some 1,168 feet above the ground. It’s a definite adrenalin rush, but there was one catch — you had to be able to walk. That was until last month, when CN Tower unveiled their new wheelchair-accessible EdgeWalk.
Launched on the opening day of the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games, the wheelchair-accessible EdgeWalk uses a purpose built wheelchair that attaches to the overhead rail and trolley system around the EdgeWalk. A specially designed walksuit that was adapted for ease of dressing was also added to the mix. And although you don’t have to be able to walk to give the EdgeWalk a try any more, there are some limitations.
Wheelchair-Accessible EdgeWalk
First and foremost, participants must be able to transfer to the EdgeWalk wheelchair independently, and maneuver it around the ledge on their own. Participants must weigh between 75 pounds and 310 pounds and be in good health. Crutches, canes and medical devices are not permitted, but prosthetic limbs are allowed. Nothing — including cameras or recording devices — is allowed to be carried out onto the ledge; and participants with glasses are even given lanyards to secure them.
And if all this sounds a bit extreme, it’s in the name of safety, as even small items can be dangerous if dropped from over 1,000 feet. Participants are also screened for explosives, narcotics and alcohol; and then put through a metal detector before they are allowed out on the ledge.
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is priced at $195 CAD, and that includes a keepsake photo and admission to the CN Tower. For more information, or to schedule a wheelchair-accessible EdgeWalk, call (416) 601-3833. Plan ahead though, as space is limited, and tickets go fast!
