I’m going to go to Las Vegas in April and I was thinking of visiting the Grand Canyon. How are the views and the access on the North Rim? I was thinking about spending the night – do they have any accessible lodging there?

The view from the North Rim is awesome, but unfortunately it doesn’t open until mid-May ( the road isn’t plowed until then and gate is locked). It is about a four-hour drive from Las Vegas.

The Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim (www.grandcanyonnorth.com) has wheelchair-accessible cabins equipped with either a tub/shower combination or a roll-in shower. There are two scenic drives on the North Rim, which offer spectacular windshield views, but you can get an equally stunning view from the sun porch of the lodge, which is also accessible. And don’t miss the accessible Cape Royal Trail, which offers a panoramic canyon view with the Colorado River in the distance.

You might also want to consider Grand Canyon West. It is about two hours from Las Vegas, and you can do it in a day trip, but it will be a long day. It is on Hualapai land, so national park passes are not valid. The big attraction there is the Skywalk, which extends out over the canyon rim and has a clear floor. The view is spectacular. There are also some good unobstructed views from the rim itself. And if you want to stay overnight there, they do have one accessible cabin with a roll-in shower at Hualapai Ranch.
