Unveiled on the eve of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a new wheelchair-accessible route through the Pompeii ruins now allows wheelchair-users access to this world-renowned archaeological site. The three-kilometer trail features smooth pathways, access ramps and a very doable grade. Previously a steep ash covered path led through the site, which prevented wheelchair access.

Say Pompeii director Luigi Curatoli, “As of today all tourists, even with reduced mobility, partially sighted, or simply those who have a baby pram to push, can enter and easily walk through the streets of ancient Pompeii and visit its most beautiful houses.

Part of a 105 million-euro restoration effort, the barrier-free trail begins at the Porta Marina entrance and provides access to 20 of Pompeii’s most important sights, including the Garden of Fugitives, which contains the fossilized remains of victims of the eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

According to Italy’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the new accessible trail is the country’s longest.
