With that in mind here are seven wheelchair-accessible destinations in the Southern US where you can dodge those wintertime blues. So make like a snowbird, pack up your shorts and flip flops, and head on down to one of these warm weather favorites.

Winter is also manatee season in Florida, and this West Palm Beach site is a great spot to see them. Manatee Lagoon features a visitor center filled with interpretive exhibits, plus an accessible manatee viewing area outside. Even better, there’s no admission charge.

Although summer temperatures often top the century mark in this California desert community, it’s the perfect wintertime retreat. And the best way to get a good overview of the landscape is to take the iconic — and accessible — Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up Chino Canyon to Mt. San Jacinto State Park.

Located about two hours southwest of Phoenix, in the middle of the Sonoran Desert, Ajo is a sleepy little town. That said they have a nice wheelchair-accessible retreat center and some artistic murals in the downtown area. And it’s just a short drive from Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, which offers and up-close-and-personal look at this unusual desert plant.
