Eclectic Sculptures Dot California Desert
Located about two hours east of San Diego, Borrego Springs is home to an eclectic open-air sculpture collection. It’s easy to find too — just take Borrego Springs Road to Galleta Meadows Estates. You can’t miss it as the larger-than-life metal sculptures literally line the roadway. And even though this upscale development looks like it should be off limits to all but the rich and famous, visitors are welcome to come in and photograph these Ricardo Breceda sculptures.
The collection of creatures is amazing, and most of them are fashioned out of rebar, wire and metal scraps that are artfully welded together. One of the most striking pieces is the serpent, which appears to be half hidden under the sand. There is also an interesting collection of historic figures, and another one of desert wildlife. And don’t miss the African elephant and the Columbian mammoth. It’s a great driving tour, and there are plenty of level spots along the way to get out and stretch your legs.
