Wheelchair-Accessible Cottage on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula
Located on the south shore of Lake Superior, about 1.5-miles west on Ontonagon, Miller’s Cottages (https://www.millerscottages.com/) boasts 15 secluded mountain cabins nestled in a verdant forest. It’s the perfect place to get away from the city, and an excellent home base for an Upper Peninsula road trip. And even though this family run establishment is a bit off-the-beaten-track, it also includes a comfortable wheelchair-accessible cottage.
An Accessible Retreat
Cottage 6 (Superior View) is located down a small dirt road, just a short drive from the office. There’s a level parking spot on asphalt in front of this wheelchair-accessible cottage; and although it lacks the required signage, it meets all the other accessible parking requirements. Plus it’s specifically reserved for cottage 6 guests.
There’s a slight half-inch lip up to the sun porch, which is furnished with two chairs. Inside, there’s good pathway access, wide doorways, and low-pile carpet and linoleum for easy rolling. There’s a full kitchen with a refrigerator, stove and microwave, as well as an ample supply of pots, pans, dishes and utensils. And if you’d like to cook outside there’s a charcoal grill and some chairs on the front porch. Round out the furnishings with a dining table and four chairs, and a love seat in the adjacent living area, and you have just about everything you need.
The bedroom is furnished with two 23-inch high queen-sized beds, and when one is moved slightly there’s wheelchair access on the left side (as you face it). A chest of drawers, a nightstand and a chair round out the bedroom furnishings.
The spacious bathroom has a full five-foot turning radius, and is outfitted with a 36-inch-square transfer-type shower with grab bars and a hand-held showerhead. A portable shower bench and a shower chair with a back are also included. Toilet grab bars are located on the back and left walls (as seated), and the bathroom is also equipped with a roll-under sink and a lowered mirror.
This wheelchair-accessible cottage is the perfect place to relax, unwind and enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature. Best of all, scenic Lake Superior is just a short stroll away.
