Wheelchair Accessible Paragliding in New Zealand
If you’ve ever dreamed of flying high in a paraglider, but figured it was impossible because you’re in a wheelchair, then think again. Thanks to the ingenuity and determination of Jezza Williams, accessible paragliding is now possible down in New Zealand. And he also has a long list of other inclusive outdoor adventures available for wheelchair-users and slow walkers.
A native Kiwi, Willems has over 20 years experience as an adventure guide under his belt. After a canyoning accident left him a tetraplegic in 2010, he shifted his focus to inclusive adventure travel. He later founded Makingtrax (www.traxtravel.co.nz), an adventure travel company that offers adapted outdoor activities to wheelchair-users and slow walkers.
Makingtrax offers single day adapted adventures, multi-day rafting trips and even custom made itineraries throughout New Zealand. Adapted activities, which are tailored to individual abilities, include horse trekking, skydiving, luge, canyon swinging, IFLY, jetboating, glacier landing and of course paragliding. Self-drive adventures are also available; and all adapted equipment — from rafting harnesses to accessible camping equipment — is included. And if your dream adventure isn’t on Williams’ list, drop him an e-mail to see if he can make that happen. For more information visit the Makingtrax website or e-mail Jezza at jezza@makingtrax.co.nz.
