Crane Flat Campground Closed for Access Upgrades
Located a short drive north of the intersection of Tioga Road and Big Oak Flat Road,
Yosemite’s Crane Flat Campground will be closed in 2022 for some much needed repairs and access upgrades.
Repairs will be made to 5,000 linear feet of the campground road in Loops B, C and D to correct failing pavement and prevent future drainage problems. Additionally, nine campsites will be eliminated. That space will be used to expand some single sites into double occupancy sites. Upon completion, Crane Flat Campground will contain 151 campsites.
Currently the campground has four wheelchair-accessible campsites. The project originally called for the addition of at least 10 more accessible campsites in Loops B, C and D; however a recent topography study determined that at least 18 standard campsites (including three in Loop E) have the potential to be converted to accessible campsites. The exact number and locations of the additional accessible campsites will be determined as the project progresses.
Accessible paved parking areas will be included in all accessible campsites, as will accessible bear boxes, picnic tables and fire pits. Camping pads at accessible campsites with severe erosion will be regraded to current access standards. Additionally, an accessible path from the loop road to each comfort station and the water faucets will be added. These concrete pathways will be at least 60 inches wide and include a 12-inch compacted shoulder.
Although the closure will temporarily reduce the number of available campsites in the park, the access upgrades will open up more accessible lodging options for wheelchair-users and slow walkers. Crane Flat Campground will reopen in the spring of 2023.
