Mexico’s First Wheelchair-Accessible Beach
Located in Playa del Carmen, Mexico’s first wheelchair-accessible beach is now open for business. This public beach was funded by the local government and designed from the ground-up to be wheelchair-accessible. It’s located in front of the Parque Fundadores, just below the Portal 2012 statue, and close to the Cozumel ferry dock. An accessible boardwalk leads down the water, making it easy for people who use assistive devices to safely enter the water. A fleet of amphibious chairs, loungers and beach walkers are also available for free loan. The amphibious chairs have three wide tires, and can be wheeled directly in the water; while the sun chairs have two wide tires and are ideal for lounging on the sandy beach. Neither chair can be independently operated, but assistance is available upon advance request. The beach walkers look like standard walkers with a seat, however they have two wide tires for easy maneuverability. Wheelchair-accessible showers are also available. It’s hoped that this project will be the model for more accessible beaches across the country.
